SMILE TO PAY WITH YOUR FACE: HACKING INTO PROGRAMMED FACIALITY IN THE AGE OF BIG DATA AND AI

    Get PDF
Humanity is facing to be increasingly immersed in the digital world, becoming hackable concerning self-, personhood and our sociality. Companies and even states are engaged in the digital governance of our behaviour and our extended digital doubles and interconnected bodily selves by profiling, tracking, surveillance, automated decision- making and big data that redefine values and our humanity. Big Data and AI do not always empower diversity. Besides aiding and opening up new fields of research that could not previously exist as in complex systems or any endeavour that has to handle vast amounts of data, AI and Big Data confront us in face-recognition und attribution of values such as emotions with inherent biases of data sets and preselected data. With this paper, we heed the perils of Big Data and AI such as our loss of privacy, sociality, autonomy and democracy in data-driven engineered determinism of programmed and automatically reckoned faciality. Programmed Faciality will be hacked into with artistic, aesthetic dramaturgies and media strategies, as a starting point to overcome participation without democracy. Hacking into datafied surveillance might be trailblazing a more just and fairer digital and Big data era leading us beyond a mere algorithmic participative "Use-Age".info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

TOWARDS A PHILOSOPHY OF HUMAN TECHNOLOGY: Outlook on cognitive enhancements in Avatar/ Virtual Reality schizophrenia therapy

This article hinges on a complex and interdisciplinary field of study named “Philosophy of Human Technology” in which a first non-exhaustive map of ethical, legal and social, technological issues is presented: Technologies constitute, magnify, amplify human experiences, but can also enslave or put human experience and life at risk for example what concerns the right to a “private Life”. The second part of this paper proposes to think three possible interfaces of the topic of Human Cognitive Enhancement. Firstly the Body-electronic interface such as in the organ-on a chip simulation of an externalized human organ function, secondly the optogenetic and general genetic “editing” interface in which new technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 open up questions for the future of human beings and our self-determination. Third -and more explicitly- the virtual-immersive interface, exemplified by cognitive enhancement by Avatar schizophrenia therapy and uncanny valley effects of digital body doubles will be introduced. The classic rubber-hand illusion had brought new insights into the plasticity of the body- image and the embodiment of the self, by underlining the strong influence of exteroception for the transformation of the bodily self. We will follow these thoughts on Avatar enhancements in schizophrenia therapy and scrutinize as well research ethical issues. Finally a short outlook on the question of two different types of technological detachment in tension in a Philosophy of Human Technology in which Cognitive Enhancement technologies are subjected to two types of technological detachments a) material/somatic substitution and b) detachment as a topos of independence and autonomy is hinted on

    Towards the techno-social Uncanny

This paper explores a technical unfinished half-method [Halbzeug] of a metaphorology (Blumenberg) of the technological other in its variations and the philosophical mise-en-scène of the techno-social uncanny. The roboticist Mori had revived the concept of a technological uncanny in human machine interaction in the spatial metaphor derived from a diagram of an uncanny valley in the reaction of a human being shaking an artificial hand in order to show why we feel a certain eeriness in relation to technological artefacts, a topic that gains importance today to reflect human technological automata relations with robots/AI/Avatars that mimic and socially resonate with humans and may even drive further technological transhumanism. Although in an artefact design approach uncanniness is said to be avoided in the human-like automaton-human encounter this paper dwells on the critic of techno-social otherness avoidance by technological overcoming of obstacles and thus argues for a cybernetic uncanny that can’t be avoided. This paper introduces in a broader sense than Mori’s a philosophical dramaturgy of Emmanuel Levinas’ temporal notion of the relation to the other, including a preliminary metaphorological variation of the temporal techno-social uncanny.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
